Stephen Duncan correspondence, 1817-1877.

Correspondence includes letters (1863-1866) from Stephen Duncan Jr., family friend F. Surget, and family members concerning social, political, and economic problems of the Reconstruction. Topics include attitudes toward freedmen, devastation caused by the war, Confederate sympathies after the war, and cotton cultivation and trade. Papers (1843-1851) include items concerning Duncan's guardianship of James Macrery Gustine, miscellaneous legal documents, bills, and receipts. A daybook (1817-1822, 1826) of the Chapitoulas Plantation near Natchez, Mississippi, concerns plantation administration and includes lists of slaves present at the Homochitto Plantation, lists of slaves purchased in 1819, and an account of the estate of Dr. James Gustine. A diary of W. P. Duncan, son of Stephen Duncan, Jr., describes his travels in France and Italy (1876-1877).

Stephen Duncan was a planter and banker of Natchez, Mississippi. The Duncan family plantations included L'Argent, Auburn, Camperdown, Carlisle, Duncan, Duncannon, Duncansby, Ellisle, Homochitto, Middlesex, Oakley, Rescue, Reserve, and Attakapas Plantation. Duncan was married to Margaret Duncan, née Ellis (d. 1815), and had two children, John Ellis Duncan and Sarah Jane Duncan. He married his second wife, Catherine A.
